Many invention promotion firms offer a free inventors kit. What exactly is a kit for inventors? Typically these kits are just very basic information, or sales brochures that promote the thinking that inventors need to suspicious of everyone. They try to sell the inventor that their idea, no matter what the idea is, should be kept a bigger secret than the identity of CIA operatives. Being human we think big secrets must be important and valuable. Once the promoter has established in the inventors mind that his invention is valuable they play on their emotions.
Emotions can make you purchase unnecessary and expensive services to protect and develop your idea. That is what most invention promotion firms are selling, expensive services.
I don't have a problem with inventors paying someone for help with their idea. Most inventors need the help of professionals. What I don't like is when inventors are sold something that they don't need or that is so overpriced they have no money left for the other important aspects of invention.
Inventing is not all that difficult and it does not have to be that expensive. It can be expensive. It can be very expensive. I have known inventors that have spent tens of thousands of dollars on their products. I know two inventors that have spent more than $100 thousand dollars and have not made a single dime from their ideas.
That is not my kind of inventing and it should not be yours either.
Work on your invention systematically, gather knowledge and spend only enough money to get the answer that inventors should be looking for. The most important question for serious inventors is...Will my invention make money? If not, you have a hobby on your hands. Hobbies are great if you know what you are getting into and enjoy the outcome.
The reason that so many companies offer an inventors kit is that they work, for them. Inventors think they are getting a valuable resource that will help them reach their goals. Instead you get a high pressure sales pitch.
There is no harm in gathering information. Just hold onto your wallet.
